Valerius de Saedeleer

Sint-Martens-Latem

Valerius de Saedeleer (1867–1941) was a key figure of the first Latem School, which distilled the Flemish landscape into serene, austere compositions with a pronounced spiritual and timeless dimension. Alongside artists such as George Minne and Gustave Van de Woestyne, he turned away from superficial realism, driven by an intense longing for inner depth and spirituality.

Yet de Saedeleer always remained distinctly himself—less symbolic than Minne, less narrative than Van de Woestyne, but radical in his sobriety.
